This society exists to promote and preserve an interest in the past of KwaZulu-Natal generally but particularly of the area between Westville and Cato Ridge, as well as in the environmental assets of the area. Founded in 1991 as the Highway Historical Society, its members decided at the end of 1998 to expand its concerns to include nature conservation as well as history. Each year the society plans a programme of about six meetings, alternating visits to nearby places of interest with formal addresses on a variety of topics. For several years, the talks have regularly been held at Pomona Gardens, in central Hillcrest. At present, the society has about 60 members. For some years the membership fees have been held at R30 per family, payable in advance at the November A.G.M. Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter in which the next meeting is given publicity. Further particulars may be had from the Secretary, Mrs Milly Rowe, as 031-764-4721, or at: roweam@telkomsa.net
Footnote: The HHS developed out of the Pinetown Historical Society, established in 1973, which was itself a response to the publication in 1968, by the local Women’s Institute, of The Annals of Pinetown.
